Frequently Asked Questions

How durable are mobile barrel saunas for towing?

Nomad mobile barrel saunas are built on custom dropdown trailers designed specifically for towing. Our mobile units have logged well over 100,000 miles of proven towing across all road conditions. The trailer and sauna are engineered as one integrated unit — not a sauna bolted to a generic trailer. The trailer will need standard upkeep over time — tires, axles, bearings, and hydraulic systems — but with proper maintenance, our mobile units are built to stay on the road for 15+ years.

Can I start a mobile sauna rental business with a Nomad sauna?

Absolutely. Many of our mobile saunas are built specifically for rental businesses. We offer custom signage and branding on the exterior, commercial-grade construction, and configurations optimized for high-use rental operations. Nomad was one of the first mobile sauna companies in North America and we’ve helped numerous rental operators launch their businesses.

What heating options are available for mobile saunas?

Mobile barrel saunas are available with wood-fired or propane stoves. We do not offer electric stoves on mobile units — the heating elements cannot tolerate the weight shift of the stones during transport or imperfect road conditions, which causes the elements to break frequently. This drastically affects stove functionality and the elements are hard to replace and expensive to keep replacing. Both wood-fired and propane options are designed for off-grid use. Wood-fired is our most popular choice and the option we recommend for the full traditional sauna experience.

What sizes are available for mobile barrel saunas?

Mobile barrel saunas are available in all of our standard sizes, from intimate 4-6 person units up to the 16' Barrel Sauna (12-14 people) and the 20' Barrel Sauna (20+ people). The 20-footer was originally built as the world’s largest mobile barrel sauna. All sizes feature 1.5-inch true thick clear grade western red cedar staves and half-inch tempered glass overlook windows.

What is a sauna trailer?

A sauna trailer is a barrel sauna mounted on a custom-engineered trailer frame, built to be towed behind a truck or SUV. Nomad Sauna trailers are designed for highway towing with a low center of gravity, integrated axles, and off-grid heating. They’re popular for mobile sauna rental businesses, lakeside retreats, and events.

Mobile Sauna Economics: How a Mobile Sauna Becomes a Revenue Stream

If you've searched for a mobile sauna or sauna on wheels, you've probably seen inflatable pop-ups and converted cargo trailers. Those aren't saunas — they're seasonal novelties. A real mobile sauna is engineered differently because it has to survive constant movement, variable weather, and daily use cycles.

Nomad builds mobile saunas the way we build stationary ones: no shortcuts, full-size heating capacity, authentic materials. The difference is engineering for the road.

Why Custom Trailer Fabrication Matters

Most "mobile saunas" buy cheap trailers and retrofit barrels into them. That creates three problems: weight distribution, structural failure, and seasonal obsolescence. Mount a barrel sauna on a standard cargo trailer and you're fighting weight imbalance, tongue-weight issues, and a center of gravity that makes towing unsafe in crosswinds or emergency maneuvers.

We fabricate custom trailer chassis specifically for sauna barrels. The drum sits lower, the weight distribution is calculated for your towing vehicle, and everything is engineered for repeated towing. We also innovated a custom cradle safety system that secures the barrel to the trailer with metal-on-metal connections — not wood screws. This ensures the sauna stays locked in place during transport, regardless of road conditions.

Off-Grid Capability

Off-grid capability is the entire premise of a mobile sauna. Our mobile units run on wood-fired (Iki) or propane (Torch) stoves — no electrical hookups needed. You can park on private land, at glamping sites, music festivals, or wedding venues. The unit is completely self-contained.

Propane is particularly popular for areas that have fire bans, where a wood stove isn't an option. Solar-integrated interior lighting means clients can use the sauna around the clock without any external power source.

Heating Performance on the Road

A mobile unit performs identically to a stationary one. Every Nomad barrel is built with the same 1.5" true thick cedar staves whether it sits on a trailer or in your backyard. Heat-up time is 60–90 minutes depending on ambient starting temperature and, for wood stoves, the quality of the firewood.

The Real Numbers: Building a Mobile Sauna Rental Operation

A mobile sauna can generate serious revenue depending on your location, how you operate the business, your host qualifications, and your pricing model. The range runs from around $20 per seat per hour on the low end up to $1,500+ for a full-day private rental. Markets, seasonality, and your ability to position the experience (wellness retreats, corporate events, wedding packages, destination pop-ups) all determine where you land in that range.

We work with operators who've scaled from one unit to multiple, renting in different geographic markets simultaneously. The barrier to entry is capital, not logistics.

Road-Ready Engineering Details

Towing an 8-footer requires a 2,000+ lb capacity receiver. A 12-footer needs 3,500+ capacity. We provide towing specs for every unit and recommend professional towing setup to avoid transmission and suspension damage on the vehicle.

All Nomad mobile saunas are built with the same 1.5" true thick staves (2x6 material) as our stationary units. Same cedar, same Yakisugi finish, same quality.

Why Nomad Mobile Saunas Are Different

We don't buy used trailers and hack them. We fabricate purpose-built chassis, use the same clear grade Western Red Cedar and finishing as our stationary saunas, and install stoves rated for constant use. Every mobile sauna is built to the same standard as everything else we make.

If you're thinking about a mobile sauna as a personal retreat that occasionally entertains, great — it works beautifully. If you're thinking about a revenue stream, we'll build it right for you.

What Happens After Delivery

Every Nomad mobile sauna ships with hands-on operational training and maintenance guidance. We provide towing specs specific to your unit and tow vehicle, and remain available for support after delivery. Our saunas are built to be maintained by their owners — we'll show you how.
