Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to build a custom barrel sauna?
Build time depends on the current production queue at the time your purchase agreement is signed and deposit is submitted. The average timeline is about 3 months. Typical timelines are discussed during your free consultation so you know exactly what to expect before committing.
What wood do you use for your barrel saunas?
We use 1.5-inch true thick clear grade western red cedar staves on every build. Our 16' and 20' units use sustainably sourced redwood for the staves, with clear grade western red cedar for the rest of the unit. Clear grade means very few knots — this matters because knots heat up faster than the surrounding wood and can become uncomfortably hot to the touch. Western red cedar is the gold standard for sauna construction: it’s naturally rot-resistant and dimensionally stable even through extreme heat and moisture cycles, so it won’t warp, cup, or twist over time. It’s a low-density softwood, which makes it an excellent natural insulator — your sauna heats up faster and the wood stays comfortable to sit on rather than scorching. Cedar’s natural oils give off a clean, aromatic scent during use and provide inherent resistance to decay, fungi, and insects without any chemical treatments. We never use knotty or lower-grade lumber.
What is the difference between electric and wood-fired sauna stoves?
Both electric and wood-fired stoves take about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes to bring the sauna to temperature, and the heat itself feels the same. The difference is in the experience and convenience. Electric stoves can be controlled via the built-in controller on the sauna or remotely if WiFi is available — start your sauna from your phone and it’s ready when you are. Electric stoves also have no exhaust, so there’s no chimney stack on top for a cleaner exterior profile. Wood-fired stoves provide a cool campfire aesthetic inside the barrel, adding ambient light and the sound of a crackling fire to the experience. Stove availability depends on the platform: backyard (placed) saunas offer wood-fired, electric, and propane. Mobile saunas offer wood-fired and propane only — electric elements can’t tolerate the stone weight shift and road vibration during transport. Floating saunas offer wood-fired, electric (with shore power), and propane.
What is Yakisugi and why do you offer it on your saunas?
Yakisugi is a traditional Japanese wood preservation technique where the surface of each stave is charred with an open flame by hand. We execute traditional Yakisugi on every unit that requests it — real fire-charred wood, not paint, stain, or a stamped pattern. Some companies stamp their wood to mimic the look of charred wood, but stamping provides none of the functional benefits of true Yakisugi. The charring process reduces the wood’s ability to absorb moisture by breaking down hydrophilic compounds on the surface, creating a naturally water-resistant barrier. It also resists UV degradation and insects without any chemical treatments. The deep black finish won’t fade in the sun the way paint or stain does — it only gets better with age.
Do you deliver barrel saunas nationwide?
Yes. Nomad Sauna delivers barrel saunas across the United States and Canada from our shop in Hudson, Wisconsin. We handle all delivery logistics to your location, and delivery costs are quoted as part of your custom order based on distance. For customers outside North America, we can arrange international export — just inquire with us and we’ll work through the logistics.
Are Nomad barrel saunas kits or fully assembled?
Every Nomad barrel sauna is fully handbuilt from scratch in our shop in Hudson, Wisconsin. We do not sell kits. Your sauna arrives complete and we handle the on-site installation with a Nomad builder. In rare cases where installation of a completed unit is not possible due to site access, we will build the sauna on-site — this takes about 3 days and does carry an additional cost, but it’s always a Nomad builder doing the work.
How do I prepare my site for a barrel sauna installation?
For backyard installations, you need a hard, level surface — typically a concrete pad, compacted gravel bed, or level deck. The minimum pad size should be the length of your barrel by 7 feet wide, or the length of your barrel by 4 feet wide if using concrete or pavers only. If using an electric stove, you’ll need a dedicated electrical circuit run to the installation location before delivery. We provide detailed site preparation guidelines during the consultation process and can advise on the best setup for your specific situation.
Your Backyard Barrel Sauna — Built From Scratch, Not From a Box
When you search for a backyard barrel sauna, you'll see prices all over the map. Some builders sell knock-down kits for cheap. Others charge a premium for a glorified barrel with minimal finish work. The reason for that massive variance? Most builders aren't actually building — they're assembling pre-fab parts or selling imported shells.
At Nomad, every sauna we make is handbuilt from the ground up, which is why a barrel sauna from us isn't like anything else on the market.
What Goes Into Every Build
Clear grade Western Red Cedar doesn't come cheap, and we don't cut corners on it. Every Nomad barrel is built with 1.5" true thick staves (that's 2x6 material, not the 1" standard you'll find elsewhere). That thickness isn't just pride — it means better insulation, slower heat loss, and a sauna built to last for generations.
Staves take stress from constant temperature cycling. Thinner wood warps, splits, and fails faster. Thicker wood handles years of daily use. The barrel sauna you buy today should be something your kids are proud to inherit — because it's still the best sauna they've ever used.
What About Size?
If you're shopping for an outdoor sauna, size drives the experience. Our 8-foot model seats 4–6 people comfortably — that's couples, small families, occasional entertaining. The 10-foot steps you up to 6–8 people and adds roughly 20% more heat mass. Every Nomad sauna delivers consistent, even heat regardless of size — the larger models simply give you more room to spread out.
Most homeowners land in the 8' or 10' range, and that's the sweet spot for residential property lines and heating efficiency. The 12-footer is where you start thinking less about backyard retreats and more about a genuine gathering space. It's still one-person-manageable for maintenance, but you've got a real room to work with.
Cedar Barrel Sauna Durability — How Long Do Barrel Saunas Last?
A well-built cedar barrel sauna from quality wood with proper maintenance should give you decades of use. The secret isn't mystery — it's material and design. We use Western Red Cedar because it naturally resists rot and decay. The wood has oils that other species don't. Combined with our torched Yakisugi exterior finish (we're the only North American builder doing authentic Yakisugi), the exterior is protected from UV and weather. The interior gets sealed naturally by the heat cycling over time.
The hardware matters too. We use stainless steel bands and proper stove mounting throughout. Cheap saunas cut corners on fasteners and use inferior materials that fail after a couple of winters of freeze-thaw cycles.
The Build and Installation Timeline
When you order a barrel sauna from Nomad, you're not getting it next week. We don't stock inventory. We build to order, and the full process — from build to delivery — takes about 3 months depending on where you are in the queue.
That timeline isn't a limitation — it's a feature. We're not rushing. Every sauna goes through the same rigorous finishing and quality checks, regardless of size.
Heating Options: Electric, Wood-Fired, or Propane
We use the best stoves on the market at the time of your order. Right now that means Iki wood-fired stoves, Homecraft electric, and Torch propane. All heat to the same temperatures. Heat-up time is 60–90 minutes depending on ambient starting temperature and, for wood stoves, the quality of your firewood.
The choice between them is purely lifestyle — electric gives you push-button convenience, wood-fired gives you tradition and the irreplaceable experience of feeding a real fire, and propane gives you quick ignition with no wood handling.
Your Sauna, On Your Terms
A backyard barrel sauna is one of the few purchases that actually improves with age and use. The cedar deepens in color, the wood seasons, and you accumulate memories inside it. That's why every detail matters to us.
